Center -- The Contemporary Science Center strives to provide teachers and students hands-on
science experiences solving real world problems using the world-class research facilities of
Research Triangle Park. The center offers day-long field studies during the school year and the
Entrepreneurs in Science Summer Camp during the summer.
Grassroots Science Museums
Collaborative -- The goals of the Grassroots Science Museums Collaborative are to: improve
the public understanding of science and technology; enhance science education in schools throughout
North Carolina; and enhance member institution's efforts to develop exhibits, programs, and
scientific collections.
NC Science Fair
-- Science Fairs provide an opportunity for students to display the results of their work in
science and technology. This opportunity is open to elementary, middle, and high school students.
Science Fairs and other student science competitions are open to ALL students, and participation
is encouraged.
North Carolina Academy of Science
(NCAS) -- The North Carolina Academy of Science (NCAS) encompasses all areas of science and welcomes
all those interested in science and its advancement. The NCAS encompasses the Student Academy
for middle and high school students. Members receive a journal, newsletter, information about
annual meetings and student members can apply for research grants.
North Carolina BioHistory -- Learn about
significant milestones in the historical development of North Carolina's biotechnology &
medical technology industry.
North Carolina Parent Teachers Association (PTA)
-- The North Carolina PTA's mission is to support and speak on behalf of children and youth in
the schools, in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make
decisions affecting children; to assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and
protect their children; and to encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of
this nation.
North Carolina Science Olympiad
-- The Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the
quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition
for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. These goals are
accomplished through classroom activities, research, training workshops and the encouragement of
intramural, district, regional, state and national tournaments.
North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and
Technology Education Center -- The mission of the center is to systematically improve
performance in science, mathematics, and technology preK-12 education as a means of providing
all children in North Carolina with the necessary knowledge and skills in science, mathematics,
and technology to have successful careers, be good citizens, and advance the economy of the
state. In pursuing its mission, the SMT Center also will help schools successfully meet the
criteria established in the national "No Child Left Behind" initiative.
North Carolina Science Teachers Association (NCSTA)
-- The NCSTA provides support and information for North Carolina's science teachers. This web site
features information on science education news, professional development, and grants.
North Carolina State University
Emerging
Science and Technologies -- This short course for teachers will bring 20 high school teachers
together each summer at NC State University for an invigorating three-day residential
lecture/laboratory experience focused on contemporary and emerging areas of science. These
teacher workshops will increase awareness of current issues at the forefront of biomedical
science and assist the teachers in transmitting the information to their students through active
learning in their classrooms.
Expanding Your Horizons
-- A conference to encourage seventh grade girls to consider careers in science, mathematics or
engineering. An exciting day in which over 400 girls, 70 teachers and 50 women scientists will
gather to learn about and do science.
Science House
-- The Science House works in partnership with K-12 teachers to emphasize the use of hands-on
learning activities in mathematics and science. Through school demonstration programs, student
science camps, teacher workshops and innovative laboratory training, and support projects, The
Science House annually reaches over 2,000 teachers and 20,000 students in 60 North Carolina
counties.
Science Junction
-- Science Junction is an interactive cyber-community for teachers, students and researchers
of science.
Sci-Link
-- Sci-Link develops innovative projects linking together research scientists, science
educators, teachers and students to translate current scientific knowledge into teaching
practices, including professional development.
Public Instruction, North Carolina
Department of -- Access information ranging from statistics and reports to curriculum
and standards.
Student Science Enrichment
Program -- The Student Science Enrichment Program provides creative science enrichment
activities for students in the 6th through 12th grades. Student who participate in these hands-on
projects experience authentic science such as studying the ocean aboard a 45-foot research vessel
or working alongside physicians at UNC-Chapel Hill.
University of North Carolina System
Learn NC -- Learn NC from the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Education, gives teachers the tools they need for
K-12 teaching and learning, from lesson plans and teaching strategies to student research to
online courses for teachers and students.
Summer Ventures -- Summer
Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically
talented students who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics. The program brings
rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for four weeks of intensive study.
